Woda w jednej z meksykańskich lagun przybrała krwistoczerwoną barwę

W ciągu kilku dni woda w lagunie La Salina u zachodnich wybrzeży Meksyku, nieopodal Huatalco, zabarwiła się na czerwono. Po niedawnym tajemniczym zniknięciu rzeki Atoyac w meksykańskim stanie Veracruz, teraz laguna niespodziewanie zmieniła kolor z zielonego na czerwony.

 

Naukowcy uważają, że kolor jest rezultatem tzw. czerwonego przypływu, inaczej zakwitu, do którego dochodzi wtedy, gdy znajdujące się w wodzie algi zaczynają się rozmnażać. Jest ich tak dużo, że nawet bardzo duży zbiornik wodny może zmienić kolor. To, jaką barwę przybierze, zależy właśnie od koloru alg. Kiedy zaczynają się rozmnażać, produkują toksyny mogące dokonać spustoszenia w danym ekosystemie, jak to stało się również Meksyku. Zmniejszona ilość tlenu w wodzie, może być również odpowiedzialna za śmierć żyjących tam ssaków, ryb i innych organizmów.

Chociaż czerwony przypływ w niektórych miejscach świata jest czymś naturalnym i powtarzającym się, mieszkańcy Meksyku uważają, że tak gwałtowny zakwit alg to skutek niesprzyjającej środowisku działalności człowieka. Powszechnie wiadomo, że La Salina jest bardzo zanieczyszczona i odprowadza się do niej ścieki.

Czasami krwistoczerwona woda jest rzeczywiście zabarwiona krwią – np. jednego dnia w lipcu 2015 mieszkańcy Wysp Owczych zabili 200 oceanicznych delfinów. Woda w zatokach miejscowości Bour i Thorshavn stała się czerwona od krwi. W szlachtowaniu grindwali uczestniczyły setki ludzi.
